Self-service tools and ways for lower-risk clients to manage themselves more effectively. Unassisted, remote completion of the PICTS assessment. Digital tools for mobile users with limited bandwidth and inconsistent connectivity.
Background
Patrick is an island native and Sex Offender Specialist with the U.S. Probation Office of Hawaii. He is a senior officer and mentor in a combined district with pretial and post-conviction duties. He likes to think he gets the best cases.
Frustrations
Traveling to remote island locations by small plane/boat possess unique physical challenges. Keeping track of paper versions of the PICTS assessment and having to transcribe them back into the Risk Assessment application is a pain point.
Motivations
Working seamlessly on and off-line tools and technologies for use in the field that save time, are efficient and accurate. Long distances between clients and the logistics of coordinating client visits in the field leaves little room for error. Tools that shortcut processes in smart ways can energize the work.
Challenges
Traveling to multiple locations with case files and paper records, along with a vest, firearm, restraints, and multiple mobile devices is a lot to manage. Connectivity and battery life on mobile devices in remote areas is a factor and a good portion of work is done off-line for later data entry. Has to travel long distances and coordinating a successful run of client visits is challenging.
